Krakow to Zakopane Day Trip

Tatra Mountains, highland culture, oscypek cheese, and alpine lakes — Poland's mountain playground

Tatra MountainsHighland Culture2 Hours from Krakow

Zakopane is Poland's most beloved mountain town — a highland resort at the foot of the dramatic Tatra Mountains that has been drawing visitors since the 19th century. Just two hours south of Krakow by bus, it offers a completely different experience from the city: towering alpine peaks, a distinctive wooden architecture, a fiercely independent highland (Goral) culture, and some of the best hiking in Central Europe. Walk the famous Krupówki promenade, ride the cable car to Gubałówka for panoramic Tatra views, taste grilled oscypek cheese from street vendors, and — if time allows — hike to the mesmerizing Morskie Oko, one of the most beautiful mountain lakes in Europe.

Getting There

Bus from Krakow (FlixBus or Polski Bus)

2-2.5 hours15-30 zł one way

The most popular and affordable way to reach Zakopane. FlixBus, Polski Bus, and several regional operators run frequent services from the MDA bus station (Małopolski Dworzec Autobusowy) next to Krakow Główny train station. Buses depart every 30-60 minutes throughout the day. The journey passes through the Polish countryside and into the foothills of the Tatra Mountains, with increasingly dramatic scenery as you approach Zakopane. Book online for the best prices — advance fares can be as low as 15 zł.

Tip: Book online at least a few days ahead for the cheapest fares. The first buses depart around 6:00 AM and the last return buses leave Zakopane around 8:00-9:00 PM. Weekends and holidays are busier — book early. Sit on the right side for the best mountain views approaching Zakopane.

Train from Krakow Główny

3-3.5 hours20-35 zł one way

Trains run from Krakow Główny to Zakopane several times daily. The journey is slower than the bus but the scenery is arguably better — the route passes through picturesque mountain valleys. Trains are more spacious and comfortable for the longer journey. Book through PKP Intercity (intercity.pl) or buy tickets at the station. The Zakopane train station is about a 15-minute walk from Krupówki Street.

Tip: Trains can sell out on weekends and holidays — book ahead. The morning departure (around 7:00-8:00 AM) gets you to Zakopane by late morning. Check the return schedule carefully as evening trains are limited. The bus is generally faster and more frequent.

Things to See & Do

Mountain adventures, highland culture, and culinary traditions that make Zakopane unforgettable.

Krupówki Street

Main Promenade

Zakopane's famous pedestrian promenade stretches for about 1 kilometer through the town center and is the social hub of the Polish highlands. Lined with restaurants serving regional highland cuisine (góralska), souvenir shops selling sheepskin goods and wooden crafts, street vendors grilling oscypek cheese, and buskers playing traditional góralski music, Krupówki is where you come to experience Zakopane's unique mountain culture. The street is lively year-round but particularly atmospheric in winter when snow covers the wooden buildings and Christmas decorations light up the night.

Open 24 hours; shops 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM
Free to walk; shopping varies

Morskie Oko (Sea Eye Lake)

Mountain Hike

Poland's most famous mountain lake, nestled in a glacial valley at 1,395 meters altitude in the Tatra Mountains. The hike to Morskie Oko starts from the Palenica Białczańska car park (30 minutes from Zakopane by minibus) and follows a paved road for 9 km one way through stunning alpine scenery. The lake itself — surrounded by towering granite peaks reflected in crystal-clear turquoise water — is one of the most beautiful natural sights in Central Europe. The round trip takes 5-6 hours including time at the lake. Horse-drawn carriages cover part of the route (one way) for those who want to shorten the walk.

Year-round (best May-October); set out by 8:00 AM
5 zł park entry; horse carriage 70-80 zł one way

Gubałówka Hill & Cable Car

Viewpoint

A hill on the northern edge of Zakopane accessible by funicular cable car from the base station on Krupówki Street. The 1,123-meter summit offers a spectacular panoramic view of the entire Tatra Mountain range stretched out before you. On a clear day, you can identify individual peaks including Giewont (the "Sleeping Knight" mountain with a cross on its summit). The top has restaurants, souvenir stalls, a toboggan ride, and walking paths. In winter, there are ski slopes and snow activities. The cable car ride itself is scenic and takes about 3.5 minutes.

Cable car: 9:00 AM - 9:00 PM (hours vary seasonally)
Cable car 35-50 zł (return); toboggan 15 zł

Oscypek Cheese Tasting

Food & Culture

Zakopane is the spiritual home of oscypek — the smoked sheep cheese that is a protected regional product. Street vendors throughout Krupówki grill oscypek over charcoal braziers, serving it hot with cranberry sauce. The cheese has a smoky, salty flavor with a firm texture that becomes gooey and melting when grilled. Beyond the street vendors, you can visit family-run highland farms (bacówki) in the surrounding valleys where shepherds make oscypek by traditional methods. A cheese tasting at a mountain bacówka is one of the most authentic culinary experiences in Poland.

Street vendors: all day on Krupówki; farms: vary
8-15 zł per grilled portion; farm visits 20-40 zł

Tatra Museum

Museum

Housed in a beautiful wooden highland villa, the Tatra Museum tells the story of Zakopane and the Tatra Mountains through exhibits on natural history, highland culture, mountaineering history, and the unique Goral (highlander) folk traditions. The architecture section showcases the "Zakopane style" — the distinctive wooden building design created by Stanisław Witkiewicz in the late 19th century that became a symbol of Polish national identity. A good introduction to the region's culture and history.

Jaszczurówka Chapel

Architecture

A small wooden chapel built in 1908 in the distinctive Zakopane architectural style, nestled in the forest on the road to Morskie Oko. The chapel is a masterpiece of highland craftsmanship — every element, from the shingle roof to the carved interior, is made from local timber. It is still an active place of worship and one of the most photographed buildings in Zakopane. The forest setting adds to the fairy-tale atmosphere. A 15-minute walk from the town center.

Summer vs Winter Activities

Zakopane is a year-round destination with completely different experiences each season.

Summer (June-September)

Summer is the best season for hiking and outdoor activities. The weather is warm (15-25°C) and the mountain trails are fully accessible. Morskie Oko is at its most beautiful with wildflowers along the trail. Advance booking is recommended for the Dunajec rafting and paragliding.

  • Hiking to Morskie Oko lake (5-6 hours round trip)
  • Gubałówka cable car for panoramic Tatra views
  • Mountain biking in Tatra National Park trails
  • Paragliding from mountain peaks (150-250 zł)
  • River rafting on the Dunajec River gorge (80-120 zł)
  • Rock climbing in the Tatra granite valleys
  • Highland farm (bacówka) visits with cheese tasting

Winter (December-March)

Winter transforms Zakopane into Poland's premier ski resort. The slopes range from beginner-friendly Gubałówka to advanced Kasprowy Wierch. The town is magical when covered in snow, with wooden buildings glowing in the lamplight. Crowds peak during Christmas-New Year and the February school holidays.

  • Skiing at Kasprowy Wierch (cable car 100-140 zł return)
  • Snowboarding on Gubałówka slopes

Day Trip Tips

Choose: Town or Hike

A day trip from Krakow does not give you enough time for both the Morskie Oko hike AND extensive Zakopane town exploration. Choose one as your focus. For Morskie Oko, take the earliest bus from Krakow and head straight to the trailhead. For a town-focused day, take the Gubałówka cable car, explore Krupówki, eat oscypek, and enjoy highland culture.

Morskie Oko Logistics

From Zakopane, minibuses run to Palenica Białczańska (the trailhead) in about 30 minutes for 10-15 zł. The 9 km paved road to the lake takes 2-2.5 hours walking, or you can hire a horse-drawn carriage for the first 7 km (70-80 zł, one way). Start walking by 9:00 AM at the latest to have time at the lake and return for the last bus to Krakow.

Check the Weather

Mountain weather is unpredictable. Check the forecast before committing to Morskie Oko — fog or rain can obscure the lake views entirely. Zakopane town activities are enjoyable in any weather. In winter, check road conditions as the Krakow-Zakopane road can be icy. The Tatra Mountains create their own microclimate.

Try Highland Cuisine

Beyond oscypek, sample authentic highland (góralska) dishes: kwasnica (sour cabbage soup), moskole (buckwheat pancakes), and kwaśne mleko (sour milk). The restaurants on Krupówki range from tourist-oriented to authentic — look for smaller places on the side streets. U Wnuka and Gazdówka are good choices for traditional highland food at 30-60 zł per meal.

Souvenirs Worth Buying

Zakopane specialties include sheepskin slippers (kierpce) from 50-150 zł, hand-knitted wool socks (15-30 zł), wooden carved boxes and figurines (20-80 zł), smoked oscypek cheese (10-20 zł per piece), and regional honey with walnuts (15-30 zł). Buy from the side streets off Krupówki for better prices — the main promenade charges a premium.

Weekend vs Weekday

Zakopane is Poland's most popular domestic tourist destination, and it gets extremely crowded on weekends, public holidays, and during school vacations. If possible, visit on a weekday when Krupówki is quieter, restaurants are easier to get into, and the Gubałówka cable car has shorter queues. The Morskie Oko trail is also significantly less crowded on weekdays.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, especially if you appreciate mountains, outdoor activities, and folk culture. The 2-hour bus ride is scenic and the town offers a completely different experience from Krakow — highland architecture, mountain cuisine, and Tatra Mountain views. A day trip gives you enough time for either a Morskie Oko hike or a full exploration of the town with the Gubałówka cable car. If you can spare two days, an overnight stay allows you to do both.
Both summer and winter are excellent but offer different experiences. Summer (June-September) is best for hiking — Morskie Oko is at its most beautiful, trails are fully accessible, and the weather is warm. Winter (December-March) transforms the town into a ski resort with snow-covered wooden buildings and a festive atmosphere. Avoid November (grey and muddy) and the peak holiday periods (Christmas-New Year, February holidays) when the town is packed.
The round trip from Palenica Białczańska to Morskie Oko takes 5-6 hours including time at the lake. The trail is a 9 km paved road each way with a gentle-to-moderate incline — suitable for anyone with reasonable fitness. Horse-drawn carriages can cover the first 7 km (saving about an hour each way). Add 30 minutes each way for the minibus from Zakopane to the trailhead.
It is technically possible but not recommended for a day trip. By the time you arrive from Krakow, rent equipment, and reach the slopes, you will have limited skiing time. If you want to ski, stay overnight in Zakopane. The main ski areas are Kasprowy Wierch (advanced, cable car 100-140 zł return), Gubałówka (beginner-intermediate, cable car 35-50 zł), and the Nosal slope near the town center.
Absolutely. Children love the Gubałówka cable car, the toboggan run at the top, the street food on Krupówki (grilled oscypek and cotton candy), and the horse-drawn carriage rides. In winter, the family-friendly Gubałówka slopes and ice rink are perfect. The Morskie Oko hike is doable with older children (8+) who are comfortable with a 4-5 hour walk. The town itself is very walkable and safe.
