Five days in Krakow is the definitive way to experience Poland's former royal capital. With this generous timeframe, you won't just tick off the highlights — you'll actually live the city. You'll have mornings to linger over coffee in medieval squares, afternoons to lose yourself in Kazimierz's street art alleyways, and evenings to discover why Krakow's food scene is one of the most underrated in Central Europe. Beyond the city limits, you'll visit two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, explore a Cold War-era communist utopia, and trade cobblestones for mountain trails in the stunning Tatras.
This itinerary is designed for travelers who want depth over speed. Day 1 immerses you in the Gothic and Renaissance grandeur of the Old Town and Wawel Hill. Day 2 takes you through the layered history of Kazimierz and Podgórze, from medieval synagogues to WWII memorials. Day 3 is devoted entirely to the solemn and essential experience of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Day 4 pairs the underground wonder of Wieliczka Salt Mine with the fascinating Soviet-era architecture of Nowa Huta. And Day 5 rewards you with fresh mountain air and jaw-dropping Tatra peaks on a day trip to Zakopane — the perfect way to close out an unforgettable Polish adventure.

Pro Tips for Your Trip
Book Auschwitz Well in Advance
With Day 3 dedicated entirely to Auschwitz-Birkenau, book your entry at auschwitz.org or through an organized tour at least 2-3 weeks ahead, especially for May-September visits. Individual visits are free but require timed-entry reservations that fill up fast.
Wieliczka Salt Mine: First Tour of the Day
Book the earliest available tour slot at wieliczka-saltmine.com (usually 8:00-8:30 AM). This gives you the smallest crowds underground and leaves the entire afternoon free for Nowa Huta. Take bus 304 from Galeria Krakowska — 30 minutes, 4.60 zł.
Zakopane: Horse Carriage Saves Hours
The hike to Morskie Oko is 9 km each way on a paved road. Take the horse-drawn carriage for the first 7 km (70 zł one way) and walk only the scenic last 2 km. This saves 2+ hours and still gives you the full lakeside experience. Take the carriage up, walk back down.
Dress in Layers for Day Trips
Wieliczka Salt Mine is a constant 14°C underground regardless of summer temperatures. Morskie Oko at 1,395 metres can be 10-15°C cooler than Krakow. Auschwitz-Birkenau is mostly outdoors with no shade. Pack layers, a rain jacket, and comfortable walking shoes for all three days.
Use Trams and Buses, Not Taxis
Krakow's public transport is excellent and cheap. A single ride costs 4.60 zł, or buy a 24-hour pass for 17 zł. Tram 4 takes you directly from the Old Town to Nowa Huta. Bus 304 goes to Wieliczka. Download the Jakdojade app for real-time schedules.
Eat Where Locals Eat in Nowa Huta
Nowa Huta restaurants are 40-60% cheaper than the Old Town. Stylowa on Plac Centralny has been serving hearty Polish food since the 1950s. A full meal with drink costs 25-40 zł. The communist-era setting is an experience in itself.
Pace Your WWII History Days
Day 2 covers Kazimierz and Schindler's Factory, and Day 3 is entirely Auschwitz. This is emotionally heavy material spread across two days. Consider light, restorative activities in the evenings — a sunset at Krakus Mound, a comforting dinner, or a simple walk along the Vistula.
